Welcome back to AC Spotlight! Today, we are joined by Danny Mendoz, producer, director, connoisseur of tabletop roleplaying productions, GM, and player. Danny is speedrunning a career in actual plays, bringing a lifetime of professional storytelling and cinematic experience to the digital tabletop.

With deep roots in theater and film production, Danny has quickly made a massive impact across multiple platforms, working closely with creators at Streaming Rainbow, Pocket Dragon Pub, Pantsless Tables, and Nerds with Dice. We spoke about his fast-paced TTRPG journey, the vital role of community networking, and how storytelling serves as an interactive medium for mutual aid.

Building a World Together

What makes Danny’s collaborative style so unique is his deep appreciation for community. Transitioning from traditional film and television to remote TTRPG actual plays allowed Danny to merge his rich artistic background with his personal life, finding a creative outlet that is both highly professional and deeply sustainable.

As a father living in a supportive multigenerational household, remote recording is a game-changer. Rather than pulling grueling 16-hour days on physical movie sets, Danny can co-create incredibly rich worlds with developers and players worldwide directly from his home, stepping away during short breaks to be with his family.

This deeply collaborative focus shapes his entire design philosophy. He doesn't see himself as an isolated creator, but as part of an interconnected ecosystem where stories are built through collective effort, shared experiences, and active community engagement.

“Actions Have Consequences”

While Danny loves lighthearted roleplay and comedic character dynamic like playing a bubby, 'band mom' lead vocalist with a Valley Girl accent he doesn't shy away from heavy narratives, psychological thriller elements, and intense emotional stakes. At Danny's tables, decisions carry real weight, and narrative stakes are deeply respected.

Danny places immense importance on table safety tools to explore complex, brutal themes responsibly, ensuring that intense character moments or narrative tragedies are built upon mutual trust and consent. This balance of intense dramatic consequences and real-world safety creates unforgettable, high-stakes storytelling environments.

“None of it is siloed. All of it is only possible because of the people I collaborate with... It would not exist, and I would do inferior work if I were not working with the people that I'm working with.”

The Future: Spotlighting Indie Systems & Rocket Club

Looking ahead, Danny is incredibly excited to highlight groundbreaking indie TTRPG systems that move beyond mainstream standards. He is currently running and playtesting Rocket Club, an upcoming 1980s middle school alien invasion game published by Evil Hat and created by M. Huard.

Unlike games where players add three dice together, Rocket Club introduces a brilliant 3d6 mechanic where individual dice track Outcome, Side Effect, and Mood separately. While the Guide (GM) determines the Outcome, players shape the Side Effects and Mood. This co-creation loop generates immediate player investment and crafts rich, emotionally resonant stories around middle school struggles, queerness, and displacement.

For aspiring actual play creators, Danny shares one main piece of advice: find ways to do good. Jump into charity streams, organize mutual aid fundraisers, and engage with community campaigns. It is the single best way to refine your craft, build lifelong friendships, and create stories that truly matter.
