In our latest AC Spotlight, Mike sat down with Kelsey, the creative force and Game Master behind Dragons Rest Tavern. They dived deep into the reality of digital storytelling, the "Rule of Cool," and why a baby Bjorn might be the most important piece of adventuring gear you can own.

The Secret Ingredient: High-Octane Snacks

Every GM has their "fuel." For Kelsey, it’s all about the crunch. While some legends of the industry opt for healthy nuts and seeds, Kelsey stays loyal to the Cool Ranch Dorito.

"If you were to give a Cool Ranch Dorito to an NPC in a D&D fantasy, their head would explode. It’s too much spice!"

Beyond the flavor, Kelsey noted the tactical advantage of a crunchy snack: it forces you to sit back and listen while your players roleplay with each other, giving the GM a well-deserved moment to enjoy the show.

From Player to Architect

Like many in the community, Kelsey’s obsession with TTRPGs ignited during the 2020 lockdowns. However, the transition from player to GM was born out of a "large presence" at the table. After realizing they tended to drive the narrative as a player, Kelsey decided to take the reins.

The "Ugly Truth" of Content Creation

Running a game is one thing; running a show is another. Kelsey was candid about the steep learning curve of becoming a creator:

  • Prep isn’t just about stat blocks; it’s about 20 hours a week on maps, lighting, and "fog of war" using tools like Inkarnate.

  • While the love of the game comes first, Kelsey acknowledged that in 2026, things like TikTok shorts, catchy titles, and YouTube SEO are the "only viable path" to sharing these stories with the world.

The Star of the Show: Mibo the Kobold

When asked about a moment that lives rent-free in their head, Kelsey didn't hesitate: Mibo. After the party rescued a distraught Kobold who lost his clan's pet dragon, he became a permanent fixture of the group. The party’s Artificer even fashioned a baby Bjorn so the Monk can carry Mibo around, keeping the "derpy little guy" out of too much mischief.
