AC Spotlight: Forgotten Adventures
We sat down with George, the Game Master and Marketing Lead of Forgotten Adventures.
Welcome back to AC Spotlight! We spoke to George, the GM and marketing mind behind Forgotten Adventures. Forgotten Adventures is a powerhouse creator of virtual tabletop (VTT) assets that has recently expanded into the actual play scene, balancing high-stakes, visual-heavy Dungeons & Dragons campaigns with a lively Twitch community.
From Keyboards to Campaign Maps
What makes George’s journey into the tabletop space so unique is his corporate escape. Formerly a prominent community manager in the PC tech industry at Corsair and Cooler Master, George chose “sanity over pay” to bring his creative marketing talents to the TTRPG community.
While George keeps the channel running and manages marketing, the Forgotten Adventures team provides a level of visual consistency that is unmatched. As a leading creator of hand-drawn 2D maps and tokens, their cohesive art style guide ensures every visual element cohesive to the world it resides in.
To keep production engaging and fill any unexpected pauses, George has even embraced his own quirks on stream. His habit of filling “dead air” with a vocal trumpet sound (“buh buh buh”) has become a beloved running joke, with the community turning it into a chat emote and a player hydration game.
“Stakes, Spirits, and Brutal Rules”
Don't let the beautifully illustrated VTT maps fool you; George’s table is notoriously high-stakes. Operating somewhere between the “Rule of Cool” and strict adherence to the rules, George relies on brutal combat and genuine danger to keep his horror-themed campaigns terrifying.
We discussed the intricate narrative of their flagship homebrew show, Fears and Fortunes, which is currently entering its fifth season. Centered on a player character named Sly (played by Crit Award-winner How Do You Love Darlin), the party has been on an epic quest to recapture 14 escaped spirits from a legendary tarot deck. They are now down to the final card.
“I play brutally. If it fails, unfortunately, it fails. But that is where the audience comes in.” |
To balance this brutality and encourage audience engagement, the channel utilizes a Twitch interactive system. Viewers can donate or use channel points to charge the players' “Ultimate Bars,” which allows the cast to unleash rule-bending, cinematic maneuvers when they need a lifesaving intervention.
The Future: 9 Months of Prep for a Single Night
While many actual play shows simply turn on a camera and play, George has massive production standards for the future of their content. For a highly anticipated, upcoming masquerade ball episode, the team spent nine months collaborating with the players, commissioning custom character fashion art, and creating brand-new, event-specific VTT tokens.
George aims to continue raising the bar for visual storytelling, finding clever ways to adapt his extensive corporate marketing background to celebrate the incredible art, storytelling, and community of the tabletop space.
