In our latest AC Spotlight, we sat down with Dre, the Game Master behind Rumble Roll. From battle-mage "Titans" to the smoke-filled haunts, Dre is on a mission to infuse the TTRPG world with authentic Filipino culture.

Redefining Mythology: The Kapre and the Manananggal

A major draw of Rumble Roll is how it introduces players to Filipino mythological creatures. Dre shared his love for the Kapre, a cigar-smoking giant who dwells in the forest.

While many see these creatures as figures of fear, Dre views them as incredible tools for world-building:

  • The Kapre’s tobacco smoke can turn a forest into difficult terrain, creating "pulses" of low visibility as the giant inhales and exhales.

  • By bringing creatures like the Manananggal to the table, players get to own these stories, flipping the script on historical fears and turning them into epic encounters.

The Rumble Roll Philosophy: Respect First

When you're bringing diverse cultures to a global audience, representation must be handled with care. Dre has one "written in stone" rule at his table:

"You can use an accent, but it cannot be the joke."

For Rumble Roll, accents are a tool for grounding a character and adding flavor, never for mockery. It’s about using a "palette of colors" to paint a respectful, immersive picture.

Beyond the Game

Running an actual play channel is about more than just rolling dice. Dre handles the "DM logistics" with a focus on community:

  1. Every session starts with a full meal. "I value our relationship more than I value content," Dre says. "The meal is part of the experience."

  2. To combat the bane of all GMs, scheduling, Dre uses a waterfall system of availability to find dates where the whole party can play.
