AC Spotlight: Tavern Tales Events
We sat down with Kade & Joseph, the minds behind Tavern Tales.
Welcome back to AC Spotlight! Today, I’m joined by Kade and Joseph, the creators of Tavern Tales a community focused organization providing inclusive, accessible, and highly social tabletop experiences.
Tavern Tales is a public facing TTRPG platform that bridges the gap between curious newcomers and seasoned veterans, hosting events at local breweries across San Diego and the Coachella Valley.
Building a Community on a Vibe Check
What makes Tavern Tales so special is their focus on real world connection. Born out of a desire to bypass the classic "scheduling boss monster" of home games, they designed public, low-barrier events like their flagship "Find Your Party" nights.
To Kade and Joseph, these sessions aren't just about escapism. With around 40% of their attendees being completely new to the hobby, their events serve as a crucial space for mental health, self-care, and finding a safe "vibe check" before committing to a home table.
"Reinvention Over Failure"
Don't let the threat of a Natural 1 scare you at Kade and Joseph's tables, critical failures are actually the highlight. They operate on a storytelling philosophy where a Nat 20 simply progresses the story, but a Nat 1 is what forces creative reinvention.
To keep players from feeling dejected, they frame these failures as circumstantial rather than personal.
“You rolled a Nat 1 because you are the number one person to pick locks, but the person who built this lock didn't quality control... turn that Nat 1 into an environmental thing instead of a 'you suck' situation.” |
The Future: 25-Minute Modular Encounters
While a traditional D&D session can last for hours, Tavern Tales keeps things fast and cinematic. They write custom, modular one-shots designed to be run in 25-minute vignettes. Because these encounters are built like puzzle pieces, GMs can rearrange the order to completely flip the narrative structure, yielding three unique one-shots out of a single written module.
This modularity has also paved the way for their highly successful DM training program. By letting aspiring GMs run the same 25-minute encounter repeatedly in a safe environment, they get the rare "DM calisthenics" needed to build confidence and master the art of pacing.
