AC Spotlight: The Adventurer's Apprentice
We sat down with Jennifer Masters, the creator of The Adventurer's Apprentice.
Welcome to AC Spotlight. Today’s a bit different as we spoke to Jennifer Masters, the writer, illustrator, and "Quest Giver" for budding young adventurers. Jennifer is the creator of The Adventurer’s Apprentice, a series designed to bridge the gap between bedtime stories and tabletop gaming.
From D&D Campaigns to Bedtime Quests
Jennifer’s journey into the world of TTRPGs is relatively recent. Playing in her second-ever campaign (and surviving the "horror house" of Curse of Strahd despite a few early character deaths), her inspiration for the series came directly from home.
"My seven-year-old saw me playing Dungeons and Dragons with my friends, and he wanted to get involved, but he wasn't ready for any of the big rules... he only had an attention span of about 15 minutes."
After searching for resources for the five-and-under crowd and coming up empty-handed, Jennifer decided to use her background as a science communicator to build her own system.
How it Plays: D6s and Imagination
The Adventurer’s Apprentice strips away the "crunch" of traditional systems like D&D, replacing massive rulebooks with 24-page standalone quests.
The System: All you need is a single D6.
The Goal: Success happens on a 4, 5, or 6. If you roll low, you don’t "fail"—you simply get the opportunity to try again in a failure-free environment.
The Skills: Beyond just numbers, the books focus on communication, problem-solving, and the "limitless" nature of imagination.
Jennifer notes that while children might start with logical solutions (like saying "excuse me" to a guard), by the second or third playthrough, they are "flying over heads with jet-powered rocket pants."
Growing with the Apprentice
The series is designed to evolve alongside the child. While the first three books cover RPG tropes like delivery quests and investigating crimes, Book Four introduces a major milestone: Character Sheets.
Book 1: A Delivery Quest (featuring a mysterious egg).
Book 2: Collecting potion ingredients for an "Itchy Dragon."
Book 3: Investigating a crime.
Book 4: Equipping the character and a first look at (non-violent) combat mechanics using a training dummy.
Where to Find the Adventure
Jennifer is currently working toward a five-part series, with the final installment, The Big Bad, aiming to introduce the concept of a "final boss" threat.
