Welcome back to AC Spotlight! We spoke to Richard (the GM) and Nimira (Lore Master and player) from The Heretics DTN.

The Heretics DTN is an actual play channel that balances high-stakes Dungeons & Dragons with group-centric video games like Gone Fishing and various horror titles.

Building a World Together

What makes The Heretics DTN unique is their history. Most of the party consists of a tight-knit friend group from a "self-described nerd high school".

  • Nimira is a self-taught lore expert who has watched the Lord of the Rings appendices over 200 times.

  • While Richard produces the show, all players help with the writing, integrating their character arcs into the broader world.

  • To keep production consistent and respect the privacy of the more introverted members, the channel uses PNG Tubers to represent their characters on screen.

"Actions Have Consequences"

Don't let the "Rule of Cool" fool you, Richard’s table is notoriously brutal. He operates on a philosophy of Equal Exchange: if the players can use a creative tactic, the enemies can too.

We discussed a legendary moment where a player’s betrayal of Strahd led to a massive 88 points of psychic damage after a tense D100 roll.

"I told them look, if you betray... I have the warning set off to the side. This is what will happen if you are not careful with your words."

To balance this brutality, the channel utilizes a Twitch point system where viewers can buy health potions or upgrades for the players, adding a layer of interactive "divine intervention" to the stream.

The Future: From 5 Hours to 30 Minutes

While their current sessions often run for a marathon five hours, Richard has big plans for the future of their content. He’s looking to implement 30-to-50 minute "story cuts"—edited versions of the sessions that remove the table talk and focus purely on the cinematic narrative, much like a produced television show.
